                                1§           1ª           2©

                pass        4©           all pass

Bidding:  North may decide to rebid just 3©, in which case South should raise to game

Lead: ª8 – top of a doubleton in partner’s suit

Play:  Without a spade lead, South can draw trumps, and make 5 trumps, 2 diamonds, 5 clubs, plus a diamond ruff for 13 tricks.  As long as West remembers the bidding, he will lead a spade, and the defence will take the first three spades.  What next? Leading a 4th spade is the answer:  if declarer ruffs low or discards, West can ruff with the ©J.  If South ruffs high, the ©J will later make a trick – a trump promotion play.

                West    North   East     South

                                                1NT        pass

                pass        2¨          all pass

Bidding:  West would like to play in a major suit fit, but cannot use Stayman, as he cannot tolerate a 2¨ response.

South should realise that North is bidding in the protective seat, and should just pass 2¨.

Lead: §4 – no obvious lead

Play:  Declarer can win the first trick with the §J, and then play a low diamond to the ¨J, losing to the ¨K.  The defence will then probably switch to a major suit, and can take 2 spades and 2 hearts for a total of 5 tricks – plus 90 to NS.
